Says measure provides “fair shake” for taxpayers and local workers

Chula Vista—Chula Vista Civic Association (CVCA) today announced its endorsement of the Fair and Open Competition Ordinance, an initiative which will appear on the June 2010 ballot in the City of Chula Vista.

If passed by voters, the Fair and Open Competition Ordinance will ensure that both union and non-union contractors can compete for work on taxpayer funded projects in the City of Chula Vista.

In making this endorsement, CVCA Board Members highlighted how the measure’s objectives are consistent with the founding principals and objectives of their organization.

“Fair and open competition for city projects has been a founding principal of the Chula Vista Civic Association, and has been a key element of our budgetary reform proposals, including our Reform Chula Vista Fiscal & Budgetary Health Plan,” said Gary Tillman, a member of the CVCA Board. “Fair and Open Competition will lower the cost of taxpayer paid city projects, leaving our city with the funds our families need for libraries, parks, and public safety,” Tillman concluded.

Many Chula Vistans have suffered terribly with the recession. In response to record foreclosures, budget problems at City Hall and rising unemployment, CVCA has advocated for policies which encourage job creation and economic development.

“By protecting the rights of all Chula Vista firms and construction industry employees –union and non-union alike -- to compete for work, the Fair and Open Competition
Ordinance will help create the local jobs our community needs,” said CVCA Board Member Jaime Mercado. Statistics show that 84.4% of construction industry employees are not members of a union.

“The Fair and Open Competition Ordinance provides a fair shake for Chula Vista taxpayers, contractors and local workers. It’s good for Chula Vista, and we urge concerned Chula Vistans to learn more and get involved by visiting the campaign website at FairnessforChulaVista.com” Mercado concluded.

Chula Vista Civic Association is joined by the Chula Vista Taxpayers Association, and Associated Builders & Contractors in supporting the Fair and Open Competition Ordinance in Chula Vista.
