As our demand for energy grows and concerns about climate change arise, as does the demand for green jobs in the economy. The U.S. Conference of Mayors and the Mayors Climate Protection Center estimates the potential for green jobs to jump to more than 4.2 million by 2038.A panel of experts are helping to further develop and provide feedback on a new Green Technology Program at Southwestern College. The Green Technology Program Advisory Committee, which held its first meeting this month, is composed of educators and green energy professionals.
"We are very excited about further developing the Green Technology Program. Green jobs represent the most rapid growing segment of the U.S. economy. This program presents the Southern California region with opportunities to not only compete, but lead in green job creation...green technology is kind of 'new industry' we need to help revitalize our local economy." said Green Technology Program Advisory Committee member and Chula Vista Civic Association President & CEO Ed Herrera
Herrera presented several ideas including the integration of green business development training, centralized area green educational/informational/job opportunity service hubs, and a "Business and/or Community Contract for Energy Efficiency" program: private business and residential energy evaluations, conducted and certified by Green Technology Program students.
Green technology employer advisory committee members on hand, compiled a list of preferred skill sets with communication, regional knowledge, and construction skills ranking amongst the highest. Other sought-after skills include business ethics and electrical knowledge.
And when it came to the region's needs, not surprising was the creation of local jobs.
The Green Technology Program Advisory Committee is set to meet again, with updates to follow.
